First Time Cruising - An All-In-One Vacation

Many people are afraid to take that huge leap to a cruise if they have never done it before. If you are one of these people, you might want to think about how easy cruising can really be and actually how inexpensive it can be compared to land-lubber vacations.

Cruises allow you to visit numerous places, all at one economical cost. You don't have to coordinate travel, rental car or lodging details because you always return to the ship. It's all done for you. Once you step onto the ship, you are on vacation. You don't have to drive to get to the next place, all you have to do is relax or take in your favorite show or participate in your favorite onboard activity or eat or get a massage...all while being taken to the next destination on your trip. The food is so much more than what you'll find on the road and you don't have to search far for a restaurant. The cost of food is all-inclusive on most cruises.

So, what's included in your cost for the cruise?

  • Ocean transportation to wherever you may be going.
  • Your stateroom or suite accommodations.
  • Kid's activities supervised by professionals that allow you to do more 'adult' things.
  • The gyms, pools and hot tubs are included.
  • Scheduled shows and entry to the nightclubs, piano bars and other venues.
  • Gourmet dining is at your fingertips, as are almost non-stop snacks.
  • Healthy activities such as yoga, basketball, volleyball, swimming and even shuffleboard.
  • All fares and taxes as advertised and that are non-commissionable.

What may not be included?

  • Any gratuities to cabin stewards, waiters and waitresses, stylists etc.
  • Spa treatments are usually not covered unless under a special package deal.
  • You will have to lay out your own cash in the casino, when shopping and for alcoholic libations.
  • Babysitting, other than already organized activities.
  • Organized tours and activities onshore may cost, but check ahead of time. Free roaming at shore stops does not cost a dime.

When it comes to ship features, cruise ships have really come a long way and offer any number of different amenities. Of course, the more amenities, the more it is liable to cost you, but the nominal cost usually outweighs the excitement and convenience of onboard things to do and watch. Ask your travel agent or research the Cruise Lines to find the ship that offers everything you would like. You may have the option of any or all of these features:

  • Some ships have all-suite or all-ocean view accommodations.
  • Champagne or Martini bars
  • Rock-climbing walls
  • Therapy pools
  • Waterslides
  • Teen discos
  • Planetariums
  • Bungee trampolines
  • Ice-skating rinks
  • Miniature golf games or golf simulators
  • Wave pools complete with surfing
  • Butler service for an amazing pampered vacation
  • Specialized boutiques from the likes of Bvlgari or Harrods

If you are thinking about taking a cruise, you need to first decide what kind of cruise you are interested in taking and then look to those Cruise Lines that cater to or provide what you are looking for.

Cruise Lines for Singles, Families and Couples:

  • Carnival Cruise Lines
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean

Luxury Cruise Lines:

  • Crystal Cruises
  • Cunard Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Seabourn Cruise Line
  • Silversea Cruises
  • Windstar Cruises

Premium Cruises are more affordable than luxury cruises but quite sophisticated:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises

Unique Experiences to exotic destinations and on smaller ships:

  • Costa Cruises
  • Orient Lines

Deciding on your destination will probably be the hardest. Shopping for the perfect cruise experience and the best available price can be overwhelming, to say the least. Last-minute cruises are on ships that leave in 30 days or less and can often net you the best price, which may make your decision on where to go much easier. You can also sail from a port near you, which may reduce your air travel and/or rental car fees immensely. But, sailing from a port near you may also cut down on the number of choices that you have for destinations, which can be a good thing. J

It is also important to understand the lingo when it comes to accommodations on board. Accommodations may be assigned according to a category, which is a group of staterooms, a.k.a. cabins that are assigned to the same category because of their size, their deck level, their amenities and their location. Prices will vary depending upon the category.

Some stateroom categories may be:

  • Interior: These will be the least expensive. The staterooms do not have windows, so if you have claustrophobia you will not appreciate one of these rooms. But, if you are planning on only sleeping there and you don't care about the size, then this will be the most economical choice.
  • Oceanview: These staterooms will be the next higher priced and will have either portholes or picture windows. When booking you might want to confirm. There is a huge difference between a porthole and a picture window and there may also be a difference in price if you are able to choose.
  • Balcony: These staterooms are a bit further up the price ladder. They feature private balconies, a definite plus for a more intimate cruising experience.
  • Suite: These rooms will be the most spacious, the most luxurious and the most expensive staterooms on board. They are usually ideally situated being the most quiet and for access to the nicest amenities onboard.

Wherever you go, you will most likely find that cruising agrees with you. I recommend booking a shorter cruise your first time out, just in case you find that cruising doesn't agree with you. On the other hand, if this is the "cruise of a lifetime" and you don't expect to be able to do it again, then book the most expensive that you can afford and plan to have the time of your life!

While staying home and dreaming of going on a cruise, Joseph enjoys working in his garden. His favorite website is Garden Harvest Supply which offers,a variety of flowering potted plants and also many vegetable plants for sale.

Top Tips For Planning a Holiday Cruise

By Paul J Jones

Article Word Count: 634 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Planning and booking a cruise can be a daunting experience, especially if it is your first time going on one. Whether you are organising your cruise through a travel agency or directly with a cruise line, here are some tips to make the trip an enjoyable one.

The first thing you have to decide is who is going on the cruise. Most cruises are family friendly and will accommodate everyone from toddlers to grandparents, but if you don't have children or don't particularly want to be around them while on holiday, there are cruises that are adult-only. Some cruises will have a dress code, particularly for dinner services, so take this into consideration too. More information about this will be available through your travel agent or cruise line.

You'll then have to decide on a budget. Generally all food and non-alcoholic beverages will be included in the booking price, but many ships will charge extra for specialist dining, casinos and additional shopping. You can save money by booking more than 2 people per cabin or by taking advantage of last minute and advance purchase offers. Cabin selection is normally a function of how much you want to spend and many cruisers will try to book cheaper rooms to free up cash for shore excursions or shopping.

Like most of the travel industry, holiday cruise prices are affected by the seasons, being more affordable in the spring or autumn. This is because children will be in school and the weather can sometimes be unpredictable. If you are travelling without children and don't mind the odd spell of bad weather, this is a good time to get a great price on a holiday cruise. Some cruises, such as ones crossing the Norwegian fjords or the Baltic Sea, have limited seasons, roughly mid-May to mid-September. Tropical destinations will be available all year long, although the amount of rainfall will vary.

The next thing you have to take into account is how long your holiday is going to be. The longer the holiday, the more options you have for cruise destinations. Shorter cruises from Britain are available for Scandinavian destinations, Dublin, Amsterdam or Hamburg. Longer cruises popular with Britons include Caribbean and South American destinations.

The most critical point is where you want to go on a holiday cruise. This is often the most difficult decision for travellers. Remember that over three-quarters of the planet are covered by water, meaning you can reach each of the four continents and a great many countries on a cruise. Your choice of destination will of course be dependent on external factors dealt with previously, but remember that cruises are a relaxing and rewarding way to travel and there are many destinations to suit any budget or time period.

Going on a cruise offers a wide range of recreational activities, which will depend on your destination, and size of ship. Larger ships can offer gyms, spas, climbing walls and more, but there's obviously the option of sitting on the sun deck and taking in the view. Scuba diving and other water sports can also be an option. Once you dock at destinations, cruises can offer port excursions to see historical and cultural sites, including museums and galleries. Your cruise line will provide a list of shore activities available to you before you book, often cheaper if you book before departure.

When arranging travel to your departure port, remember that many hotels offer long and short term hotel parking offers near international ports and docks, many with overnight accommodation, which can be a relief for early departure times.

Bearing all this in mind should help you make an informed decision to book the right holiday cruise for you and your party that will leave you with experiences and memories that last a lifetime.

Leave the Fear Behind During Your Cruise Ship Experience

By Linda Walsh
Linda Walsh
Level: Basic PLUS

Hello, my name is Linda Walsh and I was born and raised in Southern California along with my brother and 3 sisters. Although I lived ...

Article Word Count: 786 [View Summary] Comments (0)

A few years back, my parents took their first cruise on a short 4 day excursion to the Mexican Riviera. Several months before taking their cruise, my Father had a very close brush with death from Diverticulosis. He had lost 9 pints of blood through rectal hemorrhaging due to a small fisher somewhere in the intestines. Although he had seen several medical doctors and had multiple x-rays, it was never determined what had caused the massive and uncontrollable bleeding at the time. We later learned (after the cruise) that the smallest seed from a piece of fruit is enough to tear his frail intestines. This cruise on the Royal Caribbean was a celebration of life for my folks as well as their 51st Wedding Anniversary celebration.

On board the cruise ship things were going great, and a beautiful picture was taken of the two of them as they boarded this luxury liner. It was shortly after dinner that something terrible happened.

My parents had just finished up an incredible meal with the Captain when my Father consumed a desert that had blueberries with small seeds which was enough to trigger another serious episode of hemorrhaging. He was rushed to the ships infirmary where the ships doctor did everything possible to stop the hemorrhaging. My Mother was an absolute wreck as my Father was treated by the ships doctor for this potentially deadly situation. They discovered that they would have to pay the whole medical bill up front by credit card and submit the bill later to their insurance company when they returned to shore for reimbursement. Fortunately, the bill did not exceed their maximum credit line.

What they learned from the whole experience was quite interesting. The doctor on board their cruise ship was excellent. He was able to stabilize my Fathers hemorrhaging through the use of blood coagulating medication until they returned to shore. Not only was he able to stabilize my Father, but he was able to calm my Mother and was extremely caring and attentive during the entire experience. He also informed my parents as to what foods my Father should completely avoid from that day forward.

The medication that was administered to my Father while on board worked well enough that there was no need for more extreme measures such as an emergency air lift or to have my Father dropped off in Ensenada Mexico for Hospital treatment while my poor Mother returned to the US port with the ship. He recovered so well that they were both able to enjoy the last day of the cruise and even take a short excursion (the last of 4 excursions) to Ensendada for some shopping.

That was about 7 years ago. To our surprise, my Father recently shared his interest in taking another cruise for 15 days to Hawaii. He hasn't had an episode with Diverticulosis since that last cruise in 2003 and has mastered what foods he can and cannot consume to avoid any further episodes. My Mother, however, is terrified at the thought that something might go wrong. She is so consumed with fear of having a similar experience that she would rather not go on the cruise.

I have shared with her my personal opinion, one that I have developed from traveling with my own Special Needs child. Leave the fear at home. Do some home work - research and educate yourself on the following items, you will be able to overcome the fear, and enjoy a wonderful experience.

* Research the age of the ship (typically, newer ships have better medical doctors and equipment)
* Learn any information you can about the ships doctor on board
* Find out what level of service the on-board clinic is capable of providing
* Ask beforehand what foods are provided at the buffets, and other meals
* Learn about travel insurance plans that specifically include medical clauses
* Carry a credit card with a large line of credit only for those just in case medical expenses
* Try to avoid the ships infirmary altogether by being proactive with your medical condition
* If you have food restrictions-carry a list of what you can have to reference when you are standing in front of a cruise buffet that may have the ability to dazzle and confuse you
* Carry your own medicines
* And find out what the procedures and possible expenses are for the worst case scenario

Fear is a terrible destroyer of good times, an enemy of relaxation, and a deadly plague against fun vacationing. Fight fear with knowledge, preparation, and a determined attitude to have fun. Only then can you learn to life to the fullest, no matter whether you are young, or old, healthy or living with disabilities.

Happy Travels!

A Sea Change ...How to Keep Your Finances Afloat...

You have dreamed about a sea change for years, you have been on sailing holidays and now you are cruising into retirement, gleefully out to spend your children's inheritance, sell up your home and cars to buy a yacht and to set sail to new and exciting horizons!

You are following your passion and you can sail to wherever the wind and your finances will allow! The questions running through your mind are mainly to do with how you solve the money issues and keep your finance afloat? Can you make money while cruising? How do other sailors manage?

Maybe you have had sailing experience and already have a yacht and just want to go further exploring new shores. If you are lucky and planed well you have enough savings to live comfortably on or have a decent pension, investments or superannuation fund. You can now go with the flow, wherever the wind blows and your heart desires, you are amongst the lucky few living the dream!

Some folk who decide on a sea change have a business in their home towns and can conduct it while at sea. With impressive leading edge technology available to blue water sailors and communication which is getting more advanced, distance is not an issue and air travel is readily available. These sailors are in the minority.

Not all sailors want to wait till retirement age, they are not happy with short sailing holidays many accelerate the sea change and with a spirit of adventure throw caution to the wind, cast off from the safe harbor and go cruising but have to stop periodically to fill up the cruising kitty.

Some in professions find their jobs very portable and can do relief work in teaching, office work and most trades can get short term work. Round the East Coast of Australia working in the mines can bring in some excellent income and with not as much pay jobs like fruit picking or working on commercial cruise boats.

On notice boards at marinas you often find sailors in the marine industry will do jobs on boats to supplement their cruising kitty on short stays, painting or trades like mechanical work on motors or electrics, basic shipwright jobs!

It has always been on my mind that I wanted to make an income and pursue my dreams at the same time. A sea change without having to take long breaks to earn more money. Over the last few years I have tried a number of different things and have still had to go back to working at a regular job.

Travel writing jobs are still a great option; a lot of sailors keep a journal with some fantastic stories that could be told to increase the cruising kitty. I have done some writing about my sailing adventures for Cruising Helmsman, a popular sailing magazine in Australia, and received a small income. Sailing magazines are often looking for adventure and travel articles. Cruising Helmsman welcomes freelance contributions but they must meet certain standards so contact the editor first.

Some hobbies and crafts work well at local markets, and in a stop over a stall can be set up to make a few dollars to help with your finance and dream of a sea change.

I tried this angle and had a stall at Airlie Beach markets, in the Whitsunday's Australia. It was a lot of fun but not enough money. I published a motivational book on sea quotes with some excellent sailing images and photos of the Whitsunday Islands Australia. I sold dozens of them and think most people in the area have 'Dare to Dream Live Your Dream' book, they were bought for presents and sent to many places worldwide.

One of the amazing things to come out of the present economic climate is that its not just sailors that want to go cruising that are looking for alternate ways to earn an income and stop stressing about finance and job security. Many are looking at a sea change on land traveling around in a RV or caravan, yes the Aussies call them the grey nomads.

Millions are turning to web sites, eBay, Google AdSense, Affiliate Programs and shop on line, to be their own boss... and some are earning more than they ever had in a regular job. Getting an economic stimulus cheque... from any where they choose to be in the world! It is well worth your time checking out what is available and what suits you and the time you can allocate it. I have discovered it is possible to make money while enjoying your passion, while living your dream any where in the world.

Christine Couch has been sailing her yacht Levitation for over 17 years both in New Zealand, crossing the Tasman Sea to Australia and up the East Coast to the Whitsunday Islands of Queensland. She is also author of her book 'Dare to Dream - Live your Dream' which you can see and purchase through her web site that focus's mainly on women sailors. http://www.cruising-women-on-yachts.com See some of the contents of the book on http://www.cruising-women-on-yachts.com/dare-to-dream.html

Tips to Reduce Luxury Cruise Package Prices As Their Popularity Climbs Globally

By Thomas C Thottathil

True that luxury cruise packages are often meant for the rich and the powerful. However, that does not mean that this niche consumer base is reluctant to save a substantial monetary sum if the techniques were known. Most of the travel agencies and agents that are involved with such extravagant vacation options do not care to inform you of the ways to cut down on the high-priced quotes offered. However, saving a few bucks, even while holidaying on a 6-star cruise liner is possible, and easily so.

Recent news presents the climbing popularity of luxury cruise packages as a sign of things to come. Dubai has exceptionally progressed in this arena, with the region attracting world-class liners - resulting in a 30% rise in business since last year. This highlights the fact that luxury cruise packages are here to stay, and being abreast of facts to reduce the costs can actually help you in the near future too.

Here are some quick tips to help save money while planning such a vacation:

* Shop Around - The best way to arrive at an affordable deal is to shop for the same - both online as well as with the help of your travel agent. Many blindly follow whatever the agent advises them to do, and end up shelling out much more than what they would have bargained for.

* Look for Discounts - Travel agents are regularly tipped off by the agencies about existent discounts, special offers and seasonal price cuts. Make sure you know about every option at hand before taking the plunge!

* Cut Out Optional Extravagance - Once on board, keep a check on your bills amounting from excess alcohol, partying or other spoils you could do without. Over-spending on lavish suites, tipping unnecessarily heavy sums, and going on a shopping spree in an unfamiliar port or region is a strict no-no.

* Choice of Destinations - Choosing a travel plan that does not force you to travel more than relax is also not encouraged. Moreover, avoid investing in luxury cruise packages that visit areas of extreme weather, as costs relating to medical assistance and allied accessories will start taking a heavy toll on your bank balance.

* Off-Season Bookings - If you are not a party animal by the sense of the term, you can opt for off-season trips. This will not only help save a huge amount of money, but will also offer more privacy and personal space for you to unwind in.

All these factors prove that saving on a luxury cruise package deal is possible. All you need to do is to stay alert and well-informed.

Online portals like Ezeego1.co.in offer a collective impression of the various cruise packages available for luxury cruises and a clear comparison of the associated prices as well.

Features of the Royal Caribbean Cruises

By W Tsang Platinum Quality Author

Royal Caribbean Cruises provide passengers with the opportunity for a sea journey aboard the ships of one of the largest fleet of passenger ships in the world. The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines is also the cruising company managing Celebrity Cruises offering voyages on the Alaskan region. Probably the most important contribution of the Royal Caribbean Cruise lines in the industry is when it launched one of the largest cruising ships 'Sovereign of the Seas' in 1988. It set off the rebirth of the construction of large mega ships. Another mark it made in the cruising industry is the 'Freedom of the Seas' in 2006. It featured the first ever surfing machine aboard a cruise ship. The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines is up to now dominating the industry as the innovative and creative cruise company.

The Royal Caribbean fleet is composed of the biggest passenger ships. From the fleet, the 'Empress of the Seas' is the smallest, yet it can accommodate up to 1,600 passenger. Each cabin in the ship can accommodate 2 passengers. The fleet also has the Vision class which is considerably roomier than the Empress. The class offers room for about 1,800 to 2,400 guests. The Radiance class of the Royal Caribbean fleet offer accommodation for 2,000 passengers and more. The Voyager class' behemoths can sail with more than 3,100 guests aboard. The staterooms of older ships are considered smaller than staterooms of newer vessels yet the public areas like the balcony are grandly open and deluxe.

Royal Caribbean Cruises start off from numerous ports in the US. The cruise ships which depart from the ports in Tampa, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and Miami offer voyages to the Caribbean and Bahamas region. If you prefer other itineraries, choose to board Royal Caribbean ships departing from ports in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Galveston and New Orleans. Ships cruising to San Juan Puerto Rico and Vancouver, Canada take passengers to more exotic and interesting destinations. Departure ports of the ships are often changed and ships too are repositioned so it would be smart to check this information from the Royal Caribbean's official web site or from your travel agent.

Aboard the ships are truly exceptional amenities and services. Apart from that, you will be amused with the ship's interior decorations. Exceptional artworks are combined with matching backdrops which are guaranteed to project a relaxing ambiance. The ship's public area is designed with vibrant and distinct decors. The cabins where passengers stay during the night have more serene decorations. Reputable artists and experts are hired by the cruise company to decorate and design new vessels. These designers utilize design concepts which will highlight the focal areas of the newly constructed ships like Solarium for adults and pool facilities. In addition, there are certain works of art, displayed I the ship's corridors and stairwells which can provoke and induce the creative imagination of passengers. Decorative mosaics can be seen through non-glare and transparent flooring.

Dining periods aboard the Royal Caribbean ships are set with standard time. Early and late seating are provided in the main dining rooms of the ship. Gourmet appetizers, main entrees and desserts are served to passengers. There are also light and healthy foods for guests with special diets.
